Chris I agree with you on some issues but completely disagree with with the overall hurricane chase idea. First of all I have had numerous conversations with bill on scenarios that are too dangerous vs others. I have had disagreements even with veteran chasers like Jim Leonard as to what is do able ,for example he thinks it is OK to chase a cat 5 in the keys, really? could you ever get out with US1 destroyed? With that said if a cat 5 was headed to Miami I would deploy to a parking garage to film live video for people to see what is going on, just like the media does but would never go into keys in a major. I also use an elevation app to show current & surrounding elevations to avoid surge conditions and look for escape routes. I will also deploy a remote cam like Mark does so I do not have to be in the surge. To limit a chase to a cat 2 to show people the danger is equivalent to a test car crash doing 20mph as opposed to 60mph to say this is how a car holds up in an accident when they are 2 different speeds.  People need to see what a major system does up close & personal on film so that they will evacuate if one comes their way as an educational tool.. Now the swimming pool stunt was a bit over the top and unnecessary but being there filming is OK. If you watch the Josh Morgerman video above you will see how they talked about were the safest place to be was knowing they would not get into the eye and miss that opportunity. Lets face it the numbers of viewers for the hurricanecity live stream would be 20 times the amount with a chase vs in house coverage using others sources. People want to see what is going on and there is money to be made, why do you think the media does it? It can be done safely using common sense and having supplies on hand to help others and your crew.
