Pacific hurricane season starts today - New hurricane study released

With the start of the Pacific hurricane season today, I thought you might find this interesting.

There have been many studies in the past that have looked at the strength and frequency of tropical cyclones. But this study, just released yesterday, is the first that looks at where they are geographically when they peak.

"Tropical cyclones worldwide are moving out of the tropics and more toward the poles and generally larger populations. A surprising new study found that in the last 30 years, tropical cyclones, regardless of their size, are peaking 33 miles farther north each decade in the Northern Hemisphere and 38 miles farther south each decade in the Southern Hemisphere."

I found this to be very interesting and may mean that hurricanes could threaten cities like never before, as this region for tropical activity expands outward from the equator. You can read more on the news story here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2014/05/14/tropical-cyclones-poles/9087921
