Looks like best track data from 8am EDT (5am EDT PDT) was 135 knots (about 155 mph). 1 notch short at that time of cat 5. But, it is now the strongest May hurricane in the ever recorded in the North East Pacific basin.
From this morning's discussion:
"Based on the current intensity of the system, Amanda is the second strongest May hurricane in the eastern Pacific basin on record, behind Hurricane Adolph in 2001."
She has passed that now.
Looking at some of the previous intensity guidance:
SHIPS: ftp://ftp.nhc.noaa.gov/atcf/stext/ (look at bottom of folder for most recent storm runs)
http://www.hurricanecity.com/models/data.cgi?basin=ep&year=2014&storm=01&display=wind_diagram&latestrun=1 (use drop down box to select previous run)
The models really missed out on this one. A version of the GFDL at least picked up on significant intensification. (nowhere close to this of course) HWRF was really far behind.
