Don't they even air weather chasing shows on TWC? Or did they quit? I don't watch them too much anymore. I flipped over there for a moment today to see what the weather was like nationally and there was other programming on. That happens so often I usually don't bother since it is just as easy to go online and look.
TWC loves chasing, whether it is themselves or others, and whether it is hurricanes or tornadoes. They love putting that stuff on the air. Of course all media organizations love that. They may say be careful to the general public for liability reasons, but they love putting video the public goes out and gets too.
Having video real time video is a great tool, especially for tornadoes. Some people do take unnecessary risks, and underestimate their risk, but it is important to get that video to people who can see it, and then be more likely to take shelter if they are in the path.
The only real problem I have with some chasers is those who actually take the public along. I know they need money to chase, but I think that goes too far for a lot of reasons. I'm sure there are some chasers who should not be out there too, but as long as they are as responsible as possible, minimize their risk and most importantly do not get in the way, it's important if they can get that information out in real time to media and the NWS. Of course there are getting to be a lot of chasers and that is probably getting problematic logistically for tornadoes. I don't know what can be done about that. I guess they just need to increase their distance from tornadoes since there will be more chasers in the area. A chaser would probably be more focused on the tornado than other vehicles around, so that is where chasers do need to act responsibly. (Can't have a camera in your hand and drive. Fixed camera or have someone else filming.) |
