Re: In the East Pacific: Iselle is now a major hurricane; forecast to weaken before reaching Haw

Since that was a very powerful hurricane when it made landfall, and this one was a very powerful hurricane, I think that is why people compare them. Kauai knows Iniki, just like south Florida knows Andrew. (And Iniki happened a few weeks after Andrew too.)

The tracks however are extremely different.

Track of Iniki:

It made an unexpected right turn when the storm was south of the islands.

Iselle (both "I" names too) is coming from the east, moving west to west-northwest. Forecast track from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center which is now handling advisories:

The good news is that Iselle has weakened a lot and is no longer annular. The eye has really broken down. ( http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/floaters/09E/09E_floater.html  ) Hopefully that trend will continue and the islands will not see anything more than a tropical storm.

Wikipedia articles on Iniki and that hurricane season:

My site has a map of all the storms that year in the East Pacific:

http://www.tropicaleastpacific.com/models/data.cgi?basin=ep&archive=1992

It was apparently the most active year on record in that basin.
