NVEST 98L (SOON TO BE TD#5) POTENTIAL THREAT TO CARIB / BAHAMAS BY THE WEEKEND

The tropical Low located near 14N/46W is westbound at a relatively fast 25Kts and has become better organized during the day with increased convection and appears to have developed a closed surface circulation. (The 18Z model runs initialized the system with a 40Kt intensity - which, along with the NAVY's 'Cyclone Alert' issued this morning - means NHC is getting ready to upgrade the system to a Depression.) With warm SST's and generally favorable upper air winds, the system should intensify to a tropical storm within 48 hours - and possibly near hurricane intensity by the end of the week as it approaches the Leeward Islands - and/or the lower Bahamas this weekend. The rapid movement of the system typically inhibits intensification - and this is reflected in the model forecasts calling for a slow rate of intensification through the weekend.
