Chris, thanks as always for your valued advice.   You got us off dead center and tomorrow we'll download Firefox for my husband's new laptop, and use it in lieu of Edge as our default browser, just as we do on the main PC I'm writing from.   Besides being able to install Adblock Plus, we'll also be able to import all our PC bookmarks -- unbelievable tho it seems, Edge is unable to import them from an HTML file.  Ridiculous.
As for protection, we are long-time Norton users and their antivirus program has gotten way less  heavy in recent years, so we'll just stick with the known entity, even tho it costs us.   I will say that their customer service is outstanding, compared to most these days.    We also use SuperAntiSpyware's free version on the PC and run full system scans with both it and Norton weekly.

When I said don't get me started on Windows 10, the biggest gripes are privacy and update issues.   We haven't even registered the machine, in an effort to avoid identifying ourselves, just because the thing is so blasted invasive, even tho we unchecked the worst offenses during set-up.  But one really infuriating thing we cannot change is Win 10's insistence on controlling updates.   There is NO option but to install whatever they choose to send, whenever they choose to send it.  The only option is when to restart after download/installation, and even that choice is limited.  It's very Big Brother-ish, and if we'd known it we'd likely have bought a Windows 7 machine, even tho the ones we'd found were more money, and even tho we'd  be back in the same boat in five years with no MS support.

(Sorry, shouldn't have gotten MYSELF started.  LOL)
