Chris, sorry if I wasn't clear.  My husband's machine is a brand new laptop that "came with" Windows 10 as the OS, not as an upgrade.   That is, when we turned on the laptop the first thing that  happened was an automatic connection to Microsoft and the download/set-up of Windows 10 (which, as you doubtless know, is no longer done via a CD).   Anyway, during set-up I just bypassed any page that asked for us to register (or set up an account, can't recall exactly how they worded it) by providing our name, address, etc., and there were two or three different times that request appeared.   Since we don't plan to use the Store I'm relieved to hear you say that's the only time that registration would be needed.  But they hinted at how doing so would make it "easier" for them to deal with warranty issues and notifications with us.   They didn't say the warranty would be void if we didn't register, and it darned well better not be.   Of course I didn't actually read the user agreement terms and conditions -- the same T's & C's that basically say we agree to let MS update the machine at will -- so who knows what would actually happen.   Forgive me if I've already said, but the uncontrollable, automatic update thing has apparently been a deal breaker for some people, and it probably would've been for my fiercely independent husband had he known it was in there before we bought a Windows 10 machine.  Wonder how much feedback they're getting on THAT issue.
Thanks very much for the offer to answer any questions via email.  May just take you up on that sometime.
