Tampa vulnerable to $175 billion in damage should Cat 4 hit: Tampa Bay Times

Today's Tampa Bay Times, was was astonished to learn, devoted its front page to a blockbuster report generated by an insurance company that apparently resulted from a detailed study on Tampa Bays vulnerability to catastrophic storm surge in the event a "once-in'a'century" hurricane should strike. They say it would produce $175 billion in insurance losses-worse than New Orleans or NYC. Here is their excellent story; this was a great read this morning, especially the last two paragraphs, which I will quote here:

"[One country official] is shocked to hear residents of barrier islands say they have storm shutters, so they won't be going anywhere.

"'If your evacuation plan is to get plucked off of your roof, you don't have an evacuation plan,' she said."
