Opal was the closest that I know of the U.S. coming to that. When people woke up, Opal had grown overnight, into a Cat 4, with winds of 150MPH. As the storm was making landfall near Pensacola in a weakened but fast moving condition, there were people were still on the interstate, bumper to bumper, as it passed over. |
