See, that is my fear. The complacency in Tampa Bay is phenomenal. Tampa Bay has gotten hit by only two major hurricanes in the past 200 years, in 1848 and 1921. It was brushed by a couple cat 3s in the meantime that did not create nearly the damage of those aforementioned monsters. When the Tampa Bay Times recently ran a cover story indicating that a major hurricane here would cause $175 million in insurance losses from surge, wind and rain damage, the story quoted someone who lives on a barrier island down here and said they would "ride it out." People here think they survived Hurricane Charley when in fact it did not directly impact this area at all. These people have no evacuation plan and would be trying to get out of Dodge with everyone else in the greater Tampa Bay area at the same time, and probably later than they should have. I hesitate to imagine the consequences of that complacency and panic in a place where no one alive has any memory of the last major to strike this city directly. |
