I wish they had done 6 hour fixes. If it had been stronger earlier maybe they would have, rather than 12 hour fixes.

From the National Hurricane Operations Plan ( http://www.ofcm.gov/nhop/15/nhop15.htm ):

"5.5.1.3.1. For the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and Central
Pacific areas, the requests can be:

- Up to four 6-hourly fixes per day when a storm is within 500 nm
of landfall and west of 52.5W in the Atlantic.

- Up to eight 3-hourly fixes per day when a storm is forecast to be
within 300 nm of the U.S. coast, Hawaiian Islands, Puerto Rico,
Virgin Islands, DOD installations, and other DOD assets when
specified.

- Up to two synoptic surveillance missions per 24-hour period for
potentially land-falling storms.

5.5.1.3.2. In the Eastern Pacific, reconnaissance missions may be
tasked when necessary to carry out warning responsibilities.
