Location of all category five hurricanes in the NHC database

This shows where category five hurricanes have existed in the Atlantic (since 1851, but first cat 5 was 1924), East Pacific (since 1949, but first cat 5 was 1959) and Central Pacific (since 1950, but first cat 5 was also 1959). It only shows the part of the path where a storm was a category five hurricane. Patricia is included.

I should note that the way I have the system draw the line makes it seem like something was a category five hurricane further inland that it actually was, as is the case with Patricia.

You can see Patricia's path here:

Somewhere in between the points it weakened from a category five to a two in the best track database, but there is no good way to know with just official six hour points, the official record. The way I do it I think makes the most sense. Something is officially a certain wind speed using advisory data until the next advisory comes out and my system uses that method for best track data.

Another thing to note is that some older storms, with less information about them, may have been stronger or weaker than what the best track database shows. (I'm sure there were many category 5 hurricanes between 1851 and 1923, but we just don't have reliable information.)

The category 5 hurricane around the 50W line (Cleo, 1958) is the furthest east category five hurricane in the Atlantic database.
