Some models were showing a major hurricane strike. It does at least say potential in the headline. I don't know how many runs, or which models were showing it, at the time they did that headline. Although I can't see it specifically, and don't know if that model site tries to resolve the lowest pressure, but I'm not sure the image that goes with that headline actually shows a major hurricane.

I like to use this estimate for pressure and winds:

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/CI-chart.html

Not a given, depends on various factors, but I like it as just a guide. Maybe around 965mb would be a major hurricane in the Atlantic. (again, could be less or more)

The HWRF still forecasts a strong hurricane in the middle of the Gulf:
http://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=hwrf-p&region=99L&pkg=mslp_pcpn_frzn&fh=126
The images bounce around, but I wanted to show the wide view of it.

But it's just one model and the models have not been great so far, as is often the case when something has yet to form. The HWRF and GFDL have often tried to make strong hurricanes when something has yet to form. Until it actually starts organizing, if it does, the models are just not going to be that great on intensity.
