I increasingly am worried about Jamaica. The sw jog it took (which very recently seems to have leveled off but it could just be the wobbly path that is typical of stronger 'canes) seems to me to put Jamaica possibly in the bull's eye of what may be a cat 4 by then. I went to Jamaica in the summer of 1989, the year after Hurricane Gilbert decimated the island, and I will never forget how tortured the terrain looked everywhere I went, even a year later. I was struck by how comprehensively all vegetation has been completely destroyed. Dead trees that had been de-barked, defoliated and snapped in half. I was a curious kid about storms even then so I asked locals about Gilbert and the stories they told me, even as young as I was, still linger with me today. One person pointed at a massive hotel that was right on the beach and said, "See that hotel? The waves were that high." I couldn't believe it.
