NPR Report from Haiti

A Miami Herald reporter just filed a report from Haiti on NPR and said one problem on that island in terms of evacuation is that some locales do not have the resources to send out buses to move people to safer areas or to shelters. Some people who are willing to evacuate in fact cannot because they do not have the resources to do so. Apparently mayors in local towns took office mere months ago only to find their town's coffers empty. Additionally, an election (possibly national? Not sure) is scheduled for Sunday but the situation right now makes it unlikely that it will be held. The reporter also said that a reluctance to evacuate is common among Haitians, possibly because of the resource issue, but she also said a good amount of them did in fact, one way or another, make their way to shelters. She said people on coastal areas are "walking in waters that are shoulder-high." The show host said that sounds like they are unable to walk in waters shoulder-high and would more likely only be able to swim at this point. The reporter also said she had not yet seen or heard reports of deaths anywhere near the horrific death toll endured under Hurricane Jeanne but said daylight may reveal a different story especially as the storm starts to pull away this afternoon.
