There were definitely some oddities this year with tracks and also early and late hurricanes. Matthew's path was lucky for some and unfortunate for others. Storms that parallel the coast like that are dangerous. People see that too many people need to be on alert and I think that makes some less likely to prepare. It could have very easily turned into Florida. I never forget Hurricane Charley in 2004, turning early. It doesn't take much deviation in a path of a storm that parallels Florida's coast. Matthew was also another reminder of the dangerous impacts of inland flooding. There is the wind scale of course, and developments in surge watches and warnings, but inland flooding remains a very deadly aspect of tropical cyclones.
