NOAA and Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft data indicate Hurricane Irma has intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale with maximum winds of 175 mph (280 km/h) with higher gusts. A special advisory will be issued at 800 AM AST (1200 UTC) in lieu of the scheduled intermediate advisory for Irma.
