Something I typically do in these major storms is provide radar guidance for folk w/o access to the data (internet, power, cell, etc. go out). This can save lives and property (ala Norcross during Andrew). Already have a plan in place with my mother who has a landline. I will be posting on fb and whats app (for the islands). The rest have cell service and backup batts for that of course. But w/o power, they will not know where the eyewall, rainbands, surge, etc. are going. It is important those with access can get them this info. during a windstorm that likely will leave large regions w/o the ability to see things coming.
Yes, this means we hurricane nerds will be up all night. But that's just what we do. I was up 36hrs+ during Katrina. Just disseminating data, including the levee breach real-time. Back then we had newscaster on the site though.
During Wilma I had access to 3 different sources of high-res satellite or radar data, and it helped me ride out the storm on a boat. W/o it? Might've lost the boat.
Moral is, be helpful with your hobby. :) Probably tomorrow you'll start seeing the usual realtime links we use pop up on here. Use em, ideally through mirrors or redistro that doesn't clog the networks. |
