I've thought this myself of late. It doesnt matter much intensity-wise if the storm is over the glades with the gnasty side over the metro area.  That's part of the reason this track is a worst case.

There are those that even say a storm can strengthen over the glades depending on certain parameters.  Wilma certainly did not weaken.

I will say this.  The water Irma is mostly traversing is very very shallow until she gets to Andros.  There isnt much heat content there, so I would not expect any strengthening, only a leveling off.  What happens when she enters the gulfstream is another question.

My feeling is the storm will rapidly deepen, but the structure of her from the shear will be asymentric vertically.  This may keep the intensity in check, BUT it might also make the storm produce more tornadoes and rotors.  We shall see.
