Surge is a huge problem on the west coast. Florida used to be twice as large over on the west coast of Florida:

If the hurricane comes up this side of the state, surge gets higher due to shallower waters. It's pushed up against the coast and into bays with onshore wind. While Irma's wind speeds have come down, at least at the moment, the size of the wind field has been expanding. That puts a lot more water in motion and that's why it's important to evacuate when told to do so in coastal areas.
