Boston Ship Repair bags USNS Comfort overhaul contract

The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command has awarded Boston Ship Repair a $17.2 million contract for a 75-calendar day shipyard availability for the regular overhaul and dry docking of USNS Comfort (T-AH 20).

Work on the Military Sealift Command-operated hospital ship will include servicing of generator turbines, switchboard/motor controller cleaning inspection, auxiliary diesel generator top end overhaul and main circular pump number 1 repairs.

In addition to repairs, the ship will also receive medical treatment facility head overhauls and crew berthing space and shower area upgrades.

The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total contract value to $18,436,195. Work will be performed in Boston, Massachusetts, and is expected to be completed by May 28, 2017.

USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) is one of two hospital ships owned and operated by Military Sealift Command. The ships provide emergency, on-site care for U.S. combatant forces deployed in war or other operations. Their secondary mission is to provide full hospital services to support U.S. disaster relief and humanitarian operations worldwide.

USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) and USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) each contain 12 fully-equipped operating rooms, a 1,000 bed hospital facility, digital radiological services, a medical laboratory, a pharmacy, an optometry lab, a CAT-scan and two oxygen producing plants. Each ship is equipped with a helicopter deck capable of landing large military helicopters. The ships also have side ports to take on patients at sea.
