The authorities ordered evacuation strictly on account of the surge threat -- they said so. ("Not because of wind or rain, but storm surge," their order read.) Because our vehicles are stored beneath our piling house, and solely because of the potential damage to them, we could not have handled even the warned 4 ft. to 6 ft. surge IF it had overwashed the entire island -- we're pretty much in the middle -- but there was no overwash at all, not even one inch. |
