I wonder if attempting to rank these three tropical cyclones to establish the season's "worst" is a meaningful exercise. Each of the many effects (fatalities, flooding [depth, duration], wind damage, surge extent, power outage [extent, duration], etc., etc.) would have to be subjectively assigned its own weighting factor. Therefore, I think it is impossible to objectively normalize any sort of rating scale. Harvey an apple, Irma an orange, Maria a mango; three different bitter flavors of disaster. Even ordering the storms by measured observations (pressure, wind speed, wave height, etc.) could be difficult and ambiguous. |
