Viewing Google's 3-D animals on a mobile phone (O/T)

How about something fun? Apparently this has been around for a bit, but I just saw it in the past few days when Google released more 3-D models.

One some devices, you can view a 3-D animal. Even cooler, you can add that 3-D animal into your environment.

I had some issues getting it to work sometimes, especially with some of the larger animals. I haven't tried it outside yet. You have to point your phone down at first and on carpet it seemed to have issues for me. It worked better in my kitchen, with tile, to determine the size of things. And adding a giraffe into a room that wasn't big enough for it wasn't as easy. (though initially I was trying in a room with carpet) You can kind of drag where you want the animal to be, but sometimes that caused more issues, like going back to having to point your phone at the ground or locking up and crashing the app. You can also kind of use two fingers to make it larger or smaller.

I have an Android tablet it didn't work on, I didn't get the 3-D option, but an older Android phone I have that it did give me the option on.

I used the "Google" app which is installed on Android devices. I guess you can also access it through the Google browser on your phone. (might have to make sure it is not on desktop mode) When I tried that it opened the "Google" app from the browser.

There are a ton of animals that are on the list. Google doesn't tell you what they are, you have to find them. Some of the animals that people have found are at the links below.

You can add some dinosaurs too I just noticed. Haven't got tyrannosaurus rex to work in a small room yet. (and as we've learned, the dinosaurs we see in movies are likely not very accurate)

The red panda playing with a pumpkin is cute.

Some I filmed in my kitchen and in my computer room:

Lighting isn't very good. Some of the models are better than others and the lighting matters, as the lighting on them will change depending on the scene. You can record it from the screen. You can take a photo or press and hold to record. I tried to get my dad to take video of me and the tiger but it kept resetting each time I tried to get him to do it and we gave up.

I use the old phone I have to get online through WiFi, not as a phone, so I don't know how much data usage it would use through a cellular network.

Meanwhile, I just updated the satellite page on my site:

I'm still not quite done, but just made the new page live. I've been working on it recently, from updating overlays, to adding new links and making the page mobile friendly. If anyone has some good links to satellite imagery that isn't on the page, let me know.
