Scanning old photos is a great idea, I've done some for genealogy projects in the past. It is a lot of work, but worth it, I think. Do some searches for tips on how to best prepare, equipment, sorting, naming files, etc... before you begin. One thing I found was that when naming them, it was easier for me to start with the year in the name of the file. That way I could easily sort chronilogically, just with one click. You can add other data, like month, names or whatever, but being to sort files by a year and month made it much easier for me at least.

The joy it brought to others when they could be shared among everyone who may have never seen a particular photo of someone long gone was priceless.
