Actually, I am not buying it.
You have to remember that the earth is spinning on its axis with a period of 24 hours.
The angular velocity on the surface of the earth from that is much higher than any ocean currents.
Also, molten metal would have to be a lot more conductive than salt water.
So, molten metal spinning at a high angular velocity would generate a very large current and hence a big B-field in a consistant direction.
I agree ocean currents have an associated electrical current (J), but globally they run in various directions.
So, the net effect globally is that the B-fields from various legs of the currents would tend to cancel each other out.
Intuitively, I think the spinning molten core makes a lot of sense.
Doesn't Mars have a magnetic field as well?
