Josh, it means dry and stable air at the center of that air mass. Its high pressure, sinking and stable air, no thunderstorms. The center of that stable air is over La for now. Notice the thunderstorms moving around the sinking and stable air, but at the center of the air mass, no thunderstorms. Just the opposite of low pressure (like hurricanes) where the air moves in toward the center (not out and away) and thunderstorms form at the center (of low pressure). Once powerful high pressure air masses like this settle in one place, they can remain for days and weeks. This one has been here for over a week now, and will remain for several more days before shifting somewhat. While high pressure remains in place, there is no chance of tropical effects from depressions or storms. But I think a shift is forecast next week, and the northern gulf coast may be in line for tropical moisture moving up from the south. |
