To me, with the current wave that just came off Africa, there appears to be a correlation with SAL and low-level vorticity.
A high latitude surface low over west Africa; i.e. in the Sahara desert, kicks up a lot of dust and moves it over water.
Of cource, that low also generates a tropical wave.
So, I think a high latitude wave would bring along with it, in most cases, a high SAL feature.
Lower latitude waves may not since they don't cross as much desert.
The last wave that ejected looks really strong on 850mb vorticity and MIMIC-TPW.
It is currently at 15N 30W.
