MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1688 NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK 0120 PM CDT MON JUL 27 2009 AREAS AFFECTED...EXTREME SRN VT/NH...CT...MA...RI...SRN NY...NRN NJ CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY VALID 271820Z - 271915Z SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL MOVE EWD THROUGH THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON WITH A POTENTIAL FOR MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL OR DAMAGING WINDS. HOWEVER...THE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO BE TOO ISOLATED AND RELATIVELY BRIEF WITHIN INDIVIDUAL STORMS FOR A WW. AT EARLY AFTERNOON...SURFACE FRONT/TROUGH STRETCHED FROM NH SWWD INTO EXTREME SERN PA...AND WILL SHIFT EWD ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. THE MOIST AIR MASS AND MODERATE FLOW ALOFT WAS RESULTING IN SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY AND SHEAR FOR STORMS WITH A LOW END SEVERE POTENTIAL. GIVEN THAT LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE IS WEAK AND STRONGER FORCING WAS LOCATED IN QUEBEC...THE SEVERE THREAT IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE SUFFICIENTLY SUSTAINED FOR A WATCH ISSUANCE. ..IMY.. 07/27/2009
