Tim...to answer your questions...I'm not sure if the construction was made "greener"...it could be that is the case, but there hasn't been any press specifically on that subject. In regards to if the town originally had a rail system....yes it did, but that was quite a few years ago. They still have the rail station in town with the signs painted over the doors that specify "white" and "colored". The Seminole Railways still maintain the tracks, but I don't think they are used much here...they are used mostly in Fort Myers. Punta Gorda tries to keep the historical elements of the town alive....many of the buildings have beautiful murals painted on their sides to depict historical scenes. The trolley rides have been an off and on thing in Punta Gorda for many years. I've also heard yesterday that they were granted permission to have horse drawn carriage rides and bicycle taxis as well for this celebration.

It's hard to believe it's been FIVE years already since Charley and there are some people locally who are still dealing with the devestating effects of that storm in regards to home repairs, etc as they were "taken" by people who didn't have their best interest at heart. It's very sad but a fact of life after storms of that magnitude. But for the most part, because of Charley we are all better prepared and a WHOLE lot smarter than we were prior and we look forward to celebrating our community's success and revitalization!
