That was one of the main things with the "Flizzard" of New Years Day in the N/NE. Just no moisture to work with.
I still think we're gonna see the pattern build back up after it breaks down JAC. When the AO/NAO is negative the jet is further south (respectively from the poles) and we've seen for a few months the large amplified ridge over the Pacific due to El Nino. I would imagine that the block would set itself back up as it seems to be a result of this combination pattern of the teleconnections and El Nino. Earlier in the season transtion to winter, we saw one cut off low after another and I think that was a characteristic result of this current atmospheric setup.
Definitly a really cool interesting year. I find it's timing great because I spent all semester learning how these interact in my Global Physical Climo class. |
