Tornado Free Feburary

According to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), no tornadoes were reported last month.

If the statistic stands, it would be the first tornado-free February in at least 60 years.

The SPC says, that February normally sees 22 tornadoes on average, dating back to 1950.

Only five months since 1950 have failed to turn in a tornado report: October 1952, December 1963, November 1976, January 1986 and January 2003, this according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Normally in an El Nino year, February can be a very active month with plenty of severe storms.

However this year the Jet Stream has dropped so far south that it has even made the Gulf of Mexico cooler than normal.

This has added to the suppression of normal tornado activity in February of 2010.

In the past, February of 1964 recorded only 2 tornadoes and the same was true for February of 2002.

This year would be the first time the Month of February was totally shut out of tornadoes.

Lucky us.
