1998 and 2005 SST's were both noticably elevated in the areas where tropical cyclones form by April 22nd.
2010 Tropical Atlantic SST's are clearly more red than the hottest year so far, 2005.
These warm tropical waters may spawn more Cat 5's in 2010.
Shear may not be as relevant around strong Cat 5's.
The 26C temperature water depth in the Caribbean has dropped about 50 meters since 2005, so a Cat 5 near the Caribbean may stay above Cat 2 even if the center goes over land.
While 2010 clearly matches the shape of the April 2005 Tropical Atlantic SST profile, this year the Tropical Atlantic SST's are even hotter. |
