I'm really sorry Lawkat, and feel your pain. As a coastal resident you know the beauty, majesty, and terror of the ocean. Speaking from Louisiana, I know that the landscape can and does shape the people. As Obama said about the Hawaiians, "the ocean is sacred". Here in La., the oil industry had much to do with progress and the circulation of money. We were a poor but proud people with a life centered on the noble occupation of fishing. But we were for the most part uneducated. So our welcoming the oil industry to our shores was in fact a "deal with the devil". Much economic progress has been actualized for our people. But the trade-off has been tremendous. One example being the destruction of the marsh by oil pipelines and canals (this has been little talked about until recent years). And now we have this. I fear for our people and their future. And as far as economic compensation over the long term, I'm very skeptical. We live in a world dominated by multinational corporations and financial institutions and British Petroleum truly sees itself as at least an equal of the US Govt. The American economy is fundamentally founded upon the work done by British Petroleum, and BP knows this. I'm very skeptical of any long term satisfactory settlement between BP and the people of the region. I'm sorry for your loss Lawkat, and sorry that I could not be more positive. |
