Here on Pensacola Beach we have experienced several episodes of strong oil smells off and on over the past couple of weeks, mostly borne on a brisk southwest wind. We were advised we were likely smelling byproducts of the controlled burns being conducted on the slicks. Not too comforting.
Now that the oil is lurking just off our shores (and with some scatterings of tarballs actually arriving on the beaches) we're being told we may smell the oil -- but, strangely enough, so far we haven't this time, or at least not as strongly. Good thing, because the aroma is sickening and ominous, like a combo of paint and jet fuel that simply does NOT belong here.
I fear the worst is yet to come, and I don't just mean the smell. Right about now I'd trade smelling it for the next year in return for not having to see any more disgusting tar fowling our pristine waters and sands and killing our wildlife and fisheries. |
