Aprox 400-500 died in Audrey storm surge centered on Cameron La. Generally regarded as only major hurricane landfall on US shores in the month of June. Storm surge 14 feet. Much controversy over whether or not warnings of the time from the "weather bureau"  were adequate.
Town of Cameron wiped out. Later rebuilt, only to destroyed again by Hurricane Rita in 2005.
