Size and Scope also important in steering

Odds favor the development of a large hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico now. Many have mentioned the effect on steering currents depending on whether we have a substantial hurricane (more likely to turn poleward). Well size combined with intensity---speaking now about the well defined outflow pattern at the upper levels has been well know to help hurricanes of the past to "create their own environments. Once moving along a certain path (say north) it becomes more difficult to take them off that track. The outside force has to be substantial. Wondering if the CMC and the GFS are taking better account of the overall size and scope of this system in continuing it on a more northerly path, compared to the Euro which wants to send it north, and then hook it left sharply into Mexico. http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/tatl/flash-rb.html |
