Well, before any storm makes a turn, it has to slow down. Just like cars have to slow down to turn. A weakening steering influence may well suggest a weakening ridge and a corresponding turn poleward--if only temporary.

By the way, it's not just the trough in the plains that stands a chance of eroding the ridge. The ridge is being squeezed between that trough and the ULL out over the Atlantic, the one that ate 94L for lunch and spit out the bones. That ULL is pushing westward pretty determinedly. This ridge has several enemies.
