Were there any articles about the insect stuation?  That does sound unusual. However, if there is something doing that, other animals up the food chain...from frogs to birds would also be affected.  And, I still cannot believe that those fumes are safe for humans either.

If it smells like petroleum out, I think I would use an N95 mask...can get at Lowes or Home Depot. It is not 100% good on oil fumes, but will stop larger particles in the air.

So sad.
