Well, Cypress, I'm glad you brought that up 'cause it provides an opportunity to ask the question that's been on my mind: What's really wrong with that (BP-paid wages being deducted from compensation payments)? Am I not seeing this right? If the main purpose of BP's $20B fund is to make people whole -- i.e., to compensate by bringing them up to their pre-spill income level -- and if wages for work during the period are also income -- why shouldn't that income be deducted from a total claim for lost income?? Makes perfect sense to me, but please, anyone, feel free to show me where I'm wrong.
I can understand people being angry or upset if they assumed they would get both, and were counting on it, but I don't expect either BP or the government ever contemplated providing people a higher-than-prior income, which could be seen as a windfall. |
