The idea is, from reading Dr. Montgomery's papers and others, is that deep convection needs to fire at some minimal rate in order to maintain an updraft.

His premises is that there needs to be "vortical" hot-towers.

The updraft in turn sucks the juice into the pouch.

So, if UL conditions are not good; eg a 200mb vorticity, no anti-cyclone, reverse outflow channels, etc; then the updraft can not be maintained and the roll ceases.

That in turn allows the entrainment of dry air.

Dry air then adds to a downdraft.
