Thanks for this link, James.  Interesting article.  I noted that tourists have to leave Ocracoke Island Wednesday, but year-round residents can stay.  Have seen similar evac orders in the past in the Keys.  Not so here on Santa Rosa Island -- if it's too dangerous for tourists, it's too dangerous for residents, and that seems to make more sense to me, but what do I know?

As an aside, as a Gulf Coaster I was also quite interested to read the following two statements from the article:

"The approaching storm troubled many East Coast beach towns that had hoped to capitalize on the BP oil spill and draw visitors who normally vacation on the Gulf Coast."

(Oh well, too bad, guys - join the club.)

"In the Florida Panhandle, which has struggled all summer to lure back tourists scared away by the Gulf oil spill, bookings were up 12 percent over last year at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The resort is nowhere near Earl's projected path, and spokeswoman Laurie Hobbs said she suspects the increase in reservations was partly because of a discount the hotel is offering and partly because of the hurricane."

(Hmmm... very interesting indeed.  Of course, the pendulum could swing back the other way if/when one of these CV waves ends up impacting the Gulf.)
