Hazel is the first hurricane that I remember being aware of.  I was 8 years old. My family was having a reunion on Isle of Palms at my uncle's place. Everyone was supposed to have evacuated, but my uncles and my dad had decided we would stay. The people across the street who had beach front property had also stayed.  I remember all the men going down to the beach during the calm period when the eye swept by.  We were lucky to be on the "good" side of the storm as it hit further north.  I also remember that that was the first time I ever heard that eery, unearthly sound of hurricane winds.

I was on Okinawa a couple of years later for a Cat 4 Typhoon. Emma.  I remember standing in my Dad's offices (he was an Army engineer) and watching crabs and other beach creatures as they crawled up from the beach and streamed across the road to higher ground.

The storm was huge and left a lot of damage. I remember that we rarely saw Dad the weeks following the storm.  and I remember Dad's best friend  who was an Air Force pilot being really upset because a plane had gone down.  After I grew up, I learned that it was a hurricane hunter plane that had gone down. on a mission.  Hazel pales in comparison to my memories of Emma.
