I don't like jumping to scientific conclusions. A brief Google search reveals these (and other) island are part of a "submerged continent" called Zealandia. The continent sank because the earth's crust is shallow there. Perhaps global warming is part of the problem, but I doubt it's ALL of the problem.

There are many territories in the Southwest Pacific (Zealandia) and the Marshall Islands seem a particularly poor one on which to hold a civilization (maximum elevation of only 30'.) Without the aid of natural uplifting, such low-lying islands are eventually doomed to vanish simply from erosion.

If/when the time comes they must leave, they should take their fond memories with them and realize it just wasn't the best place on earth for long-term survival. And who knows; the next generation might be happier living in a more populated area...
