you answered your own questions and reasoning which I have debated before bringing extratropica systems into the mix. Extratropical systems usually come from the tropics & still bring tropical storm force & occasionally hurricane force winds north of 30N. In my original rankings and to this day I use 60 to 80miles as the criteria with only 80 miles used for documented large systems with tropical storm force winds extending out around that distance. This way you can be assured that it was a hit on that city, even for tiny hurricanes. I know extratropical systems expand ,but I cannot expand the wind fields for brushes to twice the distance as it would just throw the whole ranking system into a argument over wind fields. I also consider a system moving NE away from the U.S brings the weak side winds onshore ,so the windfield shrinks on the west side. The bottom line here is that your head will explode if you try to indivdually micropick every storm which is why I use this criteria. |
