Observations on Tornado Damage and Construction of homes

I was looking at the full page picture in the May 2nd Time Magazine of the damage done to homes in the Fayetteville NC area tornado. Having worked recovery efforts after several hurricanes this appears to be classic Gable roof failures versus a direct strike from a tornado. This also carries over into pictures in the Fayetteville Observer as well.
Most all of the homes that collapsed had gables facing the direction of the strongest winds. Those homes having sloped roofs facing that direction only lost shingles. While a home sustaining a direct hit from an F4 or F5 stand little or no chance of survival, I wonder home many homes on the edge sustained major damage due to faulty construction.
Should the building standards, regarding strapping and bracing ( if not outright banning gables), now in use in Florida need to be expanded to reduce peripheral damage from Tornadoes. I have been through tornadoes and at the was not experienced enough to recognize the cause of damage.
Has there been a studies on the amount of additional damage caused by tornadoes resulting from a lack of roof strapping.
