A series of four moderate earthquakes struck near the Island of Guam in the western Pacific today with M 5.1, 5.0, 5.3 and 5.5.
These are the largest earthquakes in the region of Guam in exactly two years, since an M 5.3-5.7 on May 12, 2009.
Last year a similar event of M 5.3 hit Guam on May 7 and April 23.
Regional seismicity often peaks in this area with the beginning of the tropical storm season in the area in May and late April.
Tropical storms and earthquakes in Guam are closely related and triggering is likely.
Tropical Storm Aere is currently north of Guam and south of Japan and may have had an effect on promoting these earthquakes.
Guam is a highly seismic area and often sees earthquakes of M>6 so this three year period is anomalous in its quiescence.
Today's earthquakes were felt with intensity III in Merizo, Guam.
The M 5.5 was felt with intensity II-III in Barrigada, Santa Rita, Mangilao, Yigo and Apra Harbor, Guam.
An M 5.0 occurred near the antipode to Guam in the region south of Ascension Island, Atlantic Ocean later in the day.
