I am guessing the reason you are petrified of thunderstorms at night would be due to the fact it is hard to see at night so one can't see what is coming at them. Night can be seen as the unknown.
We had some nasty weather her as well but nowhere as nasty as I have seen in other areas. But I must admit the weather has been beautiful since, nice and cool with cooler breezes.
