Caribbean watch: number of quakes in plate doubles in 48 hours

May 22, 2011 - PUERTO RICO

The amount of earthquakes now occurring on the Caribbean plate has doubled in the last 48 hours.

We've seen some lateral stresses on the Cocos Plate too as a result with a 4.8 magnitude earthquake striking today just off the coast of Guatemala, as this region is a subduction zone relative to the less dense an overriding Caribbean Plate.
